One of these deliveries was the massive Hellboy Boardgame by Mantic Games. The box was massive, exceeding even my expectations with respect to the amount of stuff contained within.

Once I cracked it open and set up the introductory scenario I decided I wanted some colour on the board. After rummaging through the copious amount of Heroclix that I've amassed over the years I surfaced with the Hellboy set.

A few hours later I ended up with these.

Rebasing and retouching works wonders on most Heroclix minis. A few of these only got a sepia wash applied and were called finished. I redid the skin on the humans, highlighted a few spots and added some flame markers from my box of Reaper Bones. A quick drybrush on those made them match Liz's integrated flames pretty easily.

I will get around to painting some of the Hellboy board game models at some point, but at least with these I can play with colourful heroes in the meantime.
Some of them were started and finished over a few days, but this batch has been languishing for anywhere from 6 months to 2 years in some state between primed and partially finished.

As usual it's more comic-themed stuff from me.

First up are some of the classic metal SuperFigs. I know they're rather dated now compared to some of the new stuff coming out, but I still love this line and pick them up whenever I find a few I don't have somewhere. If memory serves, Artemis is a hero with GUARD and the other two characters are villains. (At one point I had created an arrow for her bow, but it got lost in one of the two moves I made in 2017.) Steel Razor reminded me of Vera the cyborg from Superman III and got some glossy white armour. The paint job on Serpent is not my most inspired, but it's serviceable.

Artemis, Steel Razor, Serpent

The next few are from Reaper Miniatures. The Black Mist is from the first Bones Kickstarter they did years ago. I have a sidekick in the works for him somewhere. I like the name they chose for the figure, but of course he's based on "The Shadow" so that's the paint job he got here.

The Shadow

Finally are a pair of metal miniatures: Incredible Woman and Zenith. I'm sure these were intended as heroes, but for some reason I decided that they felt like villains and should go together. The end result was the villainous duo Smash 'n Grab.
They're produced by Trader's Galaxy, an independent company in Australia. Most of the models I own are now discontinued samples, but the current range of figures is really worth looking at if you like the idea of robots battling it out over limited energy supplies.

Enough rambling, here are my first painted bots!
I'll keep this update brief, but chock-full of info.

In March I graduated with honours from the 3D Modeling, Animation, Art & Design program at the Visual College of Art & Design. So naturally I'm looking for full time or freelance work in that field.
You can find my demo reel here.

I also together a very talented team of people and for the past 9+ months I've been working on launching a miniature line based on Charlie McElvy's super-cool WatchGuard characters. The first wave of our miniatures debuted at the 2019 Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo.
You can find the launch wave bundle on my online shop here.

When time permits I still do some painting and occasional gaming. I'm currently working on some super-fun nostalgic robot minis from Traders Galaxy's BOT WAR game. Use your Google-fu and I'm sure you'll find it just fine.Obsidian3Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03987358994076703659noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28027315.post-64052487011608589042018-11-13T17:17:00.001-07:002018-11-13T17:17:18.198-07:00Autumn (Re)Painting BlitzI built TONS of models during August and September, and even applied some paint to a few figures. Most of them are Heroclix repaints / rebases, but there are a few actual paint jobs in the lot.

First up is a little-known board game that I picked up on discount years ago. Herocard: Champion of New Olympia. It came with two figures, and the other two were single character expansions. The figures were a sticky plastic with low detail, but I rebased them and repainted them anyway. The game is actually pretty fun.

To'a King, Ferrion, Deva, Talon

Next up, for some reason I got on a roll doing Fantastic Four stuff. I'm not a huge fan of the team, but I had a great Thing figure built and primed from Knight Models, so I decided that he needed his pals. The other three figures are just rebased & touched up Heroclix from the "Fantastic Forces" set.

Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, The Thing, Human Torch

I've always been a sucker for She-Hulk, so when I found a She-Hulk figure I set her aside. I've already painted a version of her, but I knew she'd been a member of the FF at some point. I also added an invisible version of Sue (no paint required), Silver Surfer and Namor. Other than Sue, these three figures were completely repainted. I didn't bother stripping them first, I just painted over top.

She-Hulk (freehanded '4' insignia), invisible Invisible Woman, Namor, Silver Surfer

In the midst of all this madness, I remembered a short arc I had read back in the 90s where the original FF was supposedly killed off and had to be replaced by a whole new team. I dug through the bins and found figures for that too. Ghost Rider and Hulk were full repaints, Spidey and Wolverine are just touchups with washes and highlights applied.

Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Mr. Fixit, Spider-Man

Finally, I'd had a few other Hulk-related characters set aside for a while and decided to get them finished off as well. These two were easy, done the same way as Wolverine. Slight touchups, a wash and some highlights over top.

Red She-Hulk, Red Hulk

It's nice to get some stuff through the paint queue, even if they're mostly just repainted models. I think they turned out nicely and I had a good time getting them finished.

Why? Well the short answer is that my life has changed a lot in the last 2+ years. I've moved cities, am studying for a complete career change after 20 years, and have put a lot of time, money and focus into growing my business o2media.
I won't bore the few of you who read this with the details. They're not that exciting. What I did want to share was that my company has been developing some gaming figures of our own. A few weeks ago I announced a license agreement with Xion Studios, which lets us play in their amazing "WatchGuard" universe. I'm really excited to showcase our first two figure sculpts: The Scintillating Spider-Squirrel and his partner, Trash Panda!
These 35-mm scale figures will be cast in resin and each model will include a profile card for use in the superhero skirmish game "Super Mission Force," by Four-Color Studios. Thanks to Scott for granting us permission to use his rules.

The first two figures will be available for sale in Q4 2018, with hopefully many more to follow soon after. I'd love to hear your opinions on which characters you like, ideas for the character cards or really just anything you want to comment on!Obsidian3Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03987358994076703659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28027315.post-86870904800800000332018-07-14T03:16:00.002-06:002018-07-14T03:20:29.614-06:00The Valiant Card Game - Ninjak vs The Valiant UniverseOn my last school break I picked up The Valiant Card Game - Ninjak vs The Valiant Universe. I ordered it on a whim, after hearing that it was based on a comic and live-action web-series of the same name.

I confess it's been a couple of decades since I have read anything from Valiant, but I was aware that they had relaunched a few years back, and had picked up their RPG series and their card game last year, neither of which had yet to see the table. However if you've ever stopped by here before you'll know I'm a sucker for superhero comics, so none of these purchases should be a surprise.

Deciding that I needed to see the web-series before trying out the game I fired up YouTube and spent an hour being mildly impressed. The writing and acting weren't anything amazing, but overall the costumes very well done, and FX were certainly better than I had expected. I would certainly watch more if it were produced.

Anyway, back to the game at hand. It's a basic co-operative card game for 1 to 6 players. Each player chooses a hero to control against "Ninjak" who is essentially three decks of increasing difficulty. The heroes are interesting in that they can't use their own powers, only lend them to other heroes, so teamwork is key. If any of the heroes are reduced to 0 health all players lose. With three or more players everyone takes a secret agenda and if Ninjak is defeated one of the heroes is the winner above the others. There are minor rules changes for playing with 2 players, or a solo player controlling one or two heroes, but each hero tries to build up their stats by picking up Tactics cards, fighting Ninjak and helping their allies.

The components are nicely done with vibrant colours, excellent artwork and easy to read layouts with solid graphic design. The hero boards are double sided with comic art on one side and the live action version on the other.

I've only had a chance to try a half dozen games solo with a variety of hero duos and one game with a single hero. Some games have felt very easy and other have been quite challenging. I feel it would be a much more interesting game with a larger player count, as sharing hero powers, and working towards individual agendas would add some depth that's missing in solo play. It gets points for stylish presentation and a unique mechanic for superhero team-up action on the tabletop.

I doubt I'll be playing many more games of it solo but will certainly try to get some larger games going to see if my hypothesis is accurate. I'd recommend it to fans of the Valiant Universe, but it's probably a pass for most other gamers.Obsidian3Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03987358994076703659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28027315.post-88818135364790691732018-06-29T11:28:00.000-06:002018-07-02T14:30:36.343-06:00Ignore this Post

WARNING: If you intend to play adventures from "These Are the Voyages Vol. 1" stop reading now!

Back in the summer of 2017 preorders were announced for a new roleplaying game series called Star Trek Adventures, to be published by Modiphius. At the time I'd been playing with a regular group in a Dresden Files campaign and had just begun running my first Mutants and Masterminds 3E campaign as well. So when the Star Trek game was announced I was all over it and placed my order.

The materials showed up in early September but I didn't have a chance to actually play until a few weeks ago, shortly after the release of the free quickstart rules. After some posting around on Meetup, I found a group willing to give things a go.

I ran the quickstart scenario for a group of 5 players and we had a great time. The rules definitely need a few reads through by whoever will be running the game as the task resolution, combat and the various actions available to the characters cover a lot of ground. Having done that, I was able to give everyone a quick run-down of their character sheets, do a couple examples of Task resolution, melee and ranged combat and get playing in about an hour. We were able to play the scenario in about 2 hours once we got started, but it certainly could have run longer if the players had done a little more exploring. They enjoyed the game enough that we put together a ship and crew of our own the following week.
NCC-4215, The USS Black Sail (Excelsior Class)

The USS Black Sail has been launched on her 5-year mission from Starbase 4 to an uncharted system in response to a pre-Federation distress call. On the surface the away team discovers wreckage of Romulan origin and rescue a lone human survivor. Although under the influence of a psychotropic growth on the planet's surface, it's discovered that he's the Armory Officer from the Starship Atlantis. The Atlantis was an NX-class vessel that served in the Earth-Romulan War and was presumed destroyed in the conflict...over 100 years ago!
The turn-out was great with eight players registered, and each of them playing a different crew or team.

Games got underway at 11am, with a brief break for a pizza lunch. The tournament was played over three rounds. At the end of the third round players submitted their crew sheets so that I could tally up the Batmatch points to determine a winner. While I was doing that, the players submitted their votes for a fellowship prize. Additionally the players and shop staff submitted their selections for the best painted crew at the event.
I had come up with a pretty close approximation and tried my hand at a few custom character profiles. I've only ever play-tested one of those, but in the three games we used it, the profile seemed pretty balanced. So I took what I learned and a few months later I came up with my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crew list!

I built this crew to be as versatile as possible, but unless I went the route of the Watchmen, I still had to stick within the established rank format. The profiles are just text; I never bothered to create proper card graphics to use. With the just-released 2nd Edition rules for the game, I might try my hand at creating some new format character cards for them.

If anyone does give them a try I'd love to hear your experience, thoughts and feedback.
I've had most of the models from their second edition Kickstarter sitting in a drawer, based and primed, awaiting paint jobs.

Flipping through Netflix the other day I realized I was several years behind on the tv series Supernatural, which I believe is going into its thirteenth season! That same week I found a 1:43 scale Impala to use, so I simply had to dig out the 'Remington' brothers and slap some paint on them while I was watching the show.
The last few games I played were using the solo deck with my ever-evolving Threshold list, but I quickly stat-ed up a new list for the boys and we got in a game for them against my very unlucky Lurkers (a cult leader, some cultists and a witch who fooled everyone into thinking she was hot and innocent). Although a little odd, I decided to make Castiel the boss, taking Fearless as his free skill. Sam got Reads Languages and Dean took Duck.

Despite the heroes seizing victory in the game Sam ended up with a case of agoraphobia, while Castiel and Dean garnered advances; Tough and Heroic respectively.Obsidian3Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03987358994076703659noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28027315.post-1606781200806227692017-08-06T18:52:00.003-06:002017-08-06T19:05:32.567-06:00BMG Game & Demo Day, Aug 6, 2017I had an excellent turnout for the game & demo day for the Batman Miniature Game at Eastridge Sports Cards & Games today. The demo table was busy showcasing the game at 200 reputation, with AC Batman and Robin up against Killing Joke Joker, Classic Harley Quinn and Turk. The Bat-crew took narrow victories in each game.
On the large table an awesome 4-player battle royale took place. Several of my local players pit some fantastic looking crews against one another, fighting for supremacy over my new Gotham Carnival board layout. Two Joker crews (one led by AK Harley, another by SS Joker) faced off against LexCorp and the Bat-Family. At the end of the day the heroes took the win with a meagre 8VP.

I'd had the Punisher model since before the game was released and had no idea he'd eventually be usable with a downloadable card from Knight Models. I'm happy that he's usable in both Universe and the Batman Miniature Game. Ironically this paint job took more work than I expected, largely because while I was highlighting the skin I nearly messed it up entirely and had to spend quite a bit of time cleaning it up. I very nearly started over, and almost wish I had.

Daredevil was an easy enough job to paint. I decided I didn't want to do the all red or the yellow and brown outfits, so I went with a red-tinted black costume with red accessories. The picture shows me that I didn't do a great job on the DD on his chest. So I might have to go back and fix that up later.

Spider-Man is a great sculpt and pose. It's very evocative of the character. He was a bit more difficult to paint due to the fine lines on the spider. I'm sure I could have done a better job, but since I painted all three of these over the course of two evenings I'm perfectly happy with the result.

These three together with Wolverine make for a really fun 30-level "Marvel Knights" themed team. You could certainly add Black Widow and Black Panther to step them up to 40 while keeping to the same theme.
Here's some stuff I painted in Dec 2016 and throughout the first third of 2017

TV Arrow came with two different heads. I opted for the version with his hood down for two reasons. The first was that I wanted to use the hooded head for Arsenal / Speedy. I really dislike the baseball cap on him, so he got Arrow's hooded head. The second was that this version of Green Arrow was going to be almost entirely one colour, so having the hood down and some blonde hair on the top would help focus attention on his face amidst all that green.

Next up was Spartan / John Diggle. Although I haven't read much in the way of Green Arrow comics, I'm fairly sure Diggle was created specifically for the TV series. This model also comes with two heads; one with a helmet and one without. I couldn't help thinking that his mask looks a lot like the one Magneto wears in the comics, so I opted for the other one. He's a little boring in terms of colour palette, but I was going for something like what he wears on TV.

Black Canary isn't amongst my favourite DC characters, and the pose on this figure is dynamic yet uninspired I think. However, I enjoy using her in-game and wanted Green Arrow to have his wife along for the ride from time to time. I found that the fishnet detail on my cast was hit and miss which made it difficult to pick out in some areas. She's not my best painted figure, but is acceptable for gaming with.

Of course we can't leave out Barry Allen. My other half loves the Flash TV and I confess that I'm right there along with her. I don't feel like the model captures the character from the show nearly as well as Arrow or Spartan, although I don't know why exactly I feel so. The details on this figure were quite shallow, and the symbol in particular was very difficult to paint.

My copy of the expansion book came with the exclusive Black Flash figure as well. I didn't like the zombie look he had so I tried covering over the mouth to look more like Zoom from the Flash TV series. When I was painting him I felt that the all black colour scheme just didn't read well in miniature form so I added some silver to the costume and tried painting the inside of the symbol white. It works well enough and looks good, but due to the way the Speed Force rules work I despair that this figure might never actually see time on the table top.

Over time I've continued to add expansions and figure packs, with the hopes of some day painting it all. I know that's unlikely but at least now I have a start.

One of these figures had a broken staff, so I had to get creative trying to find a piece to replace it with. It's noticeable if you know what to look for, although at arms length I think it's a perfectly serviceable repair.

Gasp, shock...yes I've actually played the game a few times, and the rules allow you to take different versions of the troopers: regular and elite. The cards for the elite squads are red, so I painted the bases of one pair red to help differentiate them during the game.

The depths of red cloaks took a lot of coats to do and I could easily have kept going...but it's red, so who really cares. I do like the focus that the gloss coat gives to the helmets, which helps keep them from looking entirely monotone and boring.Obsidian3Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03987358994076703659noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28027315.post-85480233621188237142016-11-30T20:42:00.003-07:002016-11-30T20:42:57.964-07:00Watchmen Model Review for BMGI recently finished painting my Watchmen figures for the Batman Miniature Game from Knight Models and am excited about the results. They have been in progress since sometime in June and have only gotten one game in so far, but let's just talk about the models this time.

Rorschach was the first figure I completed. True to the movie, like all the Watchmen figures, he is a top-notch one piece model and was quick to finish.

Nite Owl is a really dynamic single piece model who proved very each to paint. He's also my favourite character visually from the movie.

The Comedian is where I stalled in my progress. Being largely black, it was a challenge to get enough colour and variation to be happy with. Additionally, I'm not sure if I clipped his cigar off when I was cleaning up the model or if it actually isn't there in the original cast. I wanted him to have one so I did a little experiment with a tiny chunk of paperclip. It ended up a touch on the big size, but works really well considering. I can hear Jeffrey Dean Morgan's bitter laugh when I look at this figure.

Ozymandias is another single piece cast and he works well with the dynamic purple and gold. The gold proved to be a bit of a challenge as it's a colour I don't use often. I do wish his pose was different, as I don't like the hands behind his back. That aside however, he looks great.

Silk Spectre II was the last model I finished and the one I was most concerned about. The details are very fine and I don't have great brush control. My fears were unfounded though, as she turned out extremely well and is a figure I'm very proud of. Gloss coat is something I use very sparingly and it looks great on her here.

Let's hope that the Watchmen will appear in the DC Universe Miniatures game sometime soon. If they do, I desperately hope that we'll see a Dr. Manhattan to finish out the line!
That in itself is exciting news for me, but even better was that it included several profile cards for existing models in their Batman range! Check out https://www.o2media.ca/blogs/news/marvel-and-dcu-miniature-game-news for all the characters and even some info about the latest FAQ for the Marvel game.
Some of them tend to languish there for months (or years), but others will land and get finished right away. I'm not sure why that's the case, but that's how it goes.

These two models were in the 'months' range, along with a few others from the "SuperFigs" line (for SuperSystem) who've yet to see completion. While I was working on Hawkeye and Deadpool from Knight Models I did a bit of work on these two as they shared some common colours.

First up is the villain Adder. She's a member of one of the villain groups; I believe the League of Supervillains. I've got Blackbird and Saber Skull from the same team in the queue for this month.

The next one is Mystick. She's a free agent according to the profiles from 3rd edition. I'll have to sit down and do some conversions of their profiles into 4th edition. I've done a few other conversions in the past and they seemed to work out fairly well.

I'm sure I say it every time I post a figure from this line, but I really love them. They're characterful, one-piece poses that are extremely easy to paint and look great on the table. They fit nicely in scale with Knight Models and a lot of other comic-themed models and I'm always happy to get these on the table no matter what game it's for.

Due to the limited number of characters I actually had painted, I needed to finish up a few more to round out the teams.

Both of these figures are highly detailed, as I've come to expect from Knight Models. Neither one had much in the way of gap filling required. A bit of filing and cleanup you'd expect with any metal model, some super glue and primer and I was ready for paint.

I opted not to deviate from the studio colour schemes almost at all.

Deadpool is a versatile character for both heroic Superhuman and Mutant teams. He's effective at range and close combat, so he makes a good utility model to add to your team.

Although his "Bodyslide" ability is reactive, I'd suggest keeping Deadpool out of situations where you need to use it that way. One of my personal tactics is using it early to get him into combat with an opposing model in the first activation. If you're using Captain America, deploying Deadpool nearby to benefit from Cap's leadership will help ensure that you hit for solid damage right off the bat.

I was never a big fan of Hawkeye in the regular or Ultimate universes in the comics. I do enjoy Jeremey Renner's version of the character in the movies, but Hawkeye just feels like another archer to me. That said, this model is very high utility. I think he's currently the model with the highest number of red abilities, and he really has something for almost any situation.

You'll want to keep Hawkeye in a good position to shoot, but being careful to not take damage. He doesn't have a very long health track, and he starts to lose his effectiveness after a few hits. You really want him on the board as long as possible to make use of all those trick arrows!

I ended up using Iron Man, Hawkeye and Black Panther against Captain America, Wolverine and Black Widow. Deadpool will get some time on the table soon, but for now he's waiting impatiently.

The photos don't really do the miniatures justice. I'm not an amazing painter but I am very pleased with how well these guys turned out. However I was having a lot of trouble getting good photos today. They look much better in person!Obsidian3Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03987358994076703659noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28027315.post-769496734890497062016-09-21T15:21:00.000-06:002016-09-21T15:31:17.507-06:00Some Classic Characters Painted for BMG DemosWhen preparing for my demo earlier this month I planned out a little 2x2 table to force the player's characters into combat more quickly. I had originally planned to do some kind of bank heist scenario using loot and the safe boxes, but it seemed too far from the actual way the game is played. It wouldn't help if I made things more complicated just for the sake of a custom scenario. In the end I decided I'd do 200 reputation crews: Arkham City Batman and Robin vs Classic Harley, Joker (Killing Joke) with Turk along for the ride. Since I only had Turk painted I had some work ahead of me and only a few days to do it!

Having a deadline is often helpful for me, even if it's a self imposed one. I was able to paint all four characters over a few sessions on Friday and Saturday. Harley's face detailing was just too small, so I wasn't even able to do some white in for her eyes, and may go back now that I'm no longer under pressure. The rest turned out very nicely and I'm happy with them. Robin is my favorite paint job of the four.
This version of Joker does better with a bunch of henchmen around him, but I love the sculpt and the poison flower. It just captures what I think most people want when having a Joker model on the table. For Classic Harley...I just love the acrobat trait. The ease of getting around the board is great, not to mention that Harley can dodge bullets as she also gains Dodge. Her 360 attack didn't serve much use in the demos, but the players loved the flavor of "True Love: Joker" as well as the mallet!
In one of the demo games the Joker crew caught Batman up on some containers. Harley hit him and pushed him with her mallet. Luckily Batman had a special counter in reserve and was able to use his cape to avoid falling damage. The Joker crew won by a slim margin in VP.
In another demo game, Batman and Robin went on the offensive, picking apart The Joker crew from the bottom up. Turk got hammered by a batarang then several bat-fists to the face. Harley picked up some loot but misread the dynamic duo's plan and paid for it with getting knocked out twice! The Joker made a last gasp effort to collect some victory points on his ammo objective, but Robin dropped a smoke grenade on him, blinding him. Batman rushed into the smoke and took the Joker down hard.
In terms of the models and the rules, I think the Arkham City version of Batman and Robin make a great team. On initial release Robin lacked a little in the damage department, but was given "Combo w/ Bo" later which helps a lot. His smoke grenade is a potent weapon against groups of henchmen and more expensive characters, hindering their ability to move and spend counters. Batman is pricey, but can do it all. Ranged attacks without direct line of sight, good mobility with Batclaw. His damage isn't to be underestimated either, as he has "Reinforced Gloves" which can't be stolen.

All the players had a great time and I really enjoyed running the demos. I've got a demo game of Batman Miniature Game and the Marvel Universe Miniature Game scheduled for Saturday October 1st at Fallcon. Check their schedule page to sign up!
This is the final of my four original season 1 teams to be painted.

If you've stopped by and read any of my posts about other teams, you've have seen that many of them are based on characters from Masters of the Universe. The "Berserker Island Beasts" are based Beastman, who is also serving as their offensive coach.
Despite looking through lots of reference images, I struggled to find a colour I liked for the fur and ended up using the bright P3 Ember Orange. Selecting uniform colours for the team was also a challenge as Beastman doesn't have much in the way of accessories or colours other than orange, and those he does have vary widely depending on the depiction. The Beastman figure I'll be using is an old Grenadier miniature from the 80s, but he's not painted yet.

The Veer-myn team has no jacks, just plenty of strikers, a couple guards, a keeper and also the MVP "Reek Rolat" who will only play for Veer-myn teams. Might as well paint him up the same as the rest.
I modified a few of the striker figures to try getting some more variation in the poses. The end result is serviceable, however the models for this team are not my favorites from the line. Despite that I've enjoyed playing the team in a few games so far.
I coached this team to an undefeated 5-0 record to win the 2016 CDBL Championship. I didn't miss the fact that the don't have jacks. The low skill of the strikers is well mitigated by their speed, and adding an extra guard made a huge difference to how well they were able to survive against other teams.
