Marvel Team Up FAQ

Marvel Team-Up Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL

1. This set is legal for sanctioned Constructed tournaments from March 9, 2007.

2. Dual loyalty

Dual loyalty means:

Recruit this card only if both its printed affiliations are among the affiliations of characters you control.

To recruit a dual loyalty character, check its two printed affiliations against all current affiliations (printed or not) of characters you control.

Example: Morbius, Shadow of the Vampire has dual loyalty and the printed Underworld and Spider-Friends affiliations. You can recruit Morbius if you control both an Underworld character and a Spider-Friends character, or a character with both affiliations. You can also recruit him if you control a Team-Up crossing over Underworld and Spider-Friends and a character with either affiliation.

3. Alternate boost

In this set, the boost keyword is followed by an action rather than a number. In each case, the additional boost cost is to perform that action rather than pay a number of resource points.

Example: Spot has 7 ATK and reads "Boost—Discard a card: When Spot enters play, he gets +2 ATK this turn and has flight this turn." As you recruit Spot, you may choose to discard a card as an additional cost. If you do, Spot has 9 ATK and flight this turn after his triggered effect resolves.

4. Pay ATK/DEF this turn

Some character powers have a cost of paying an amount of ATK or DEF. To pay ATK or DEF is to lower that character’s stat until end of turn. You can pay X ATK or DEF only if a character has X or more of that stat (including bonuses added by modifiers, such as Savage Beatdown’s +5 ATK).

Example: Daredevil, New Kingpin reads, "Pay 2 ATK this turn >>> Exhaust target visible character. Use only if Daredevil is attacking." Any time Daredevil is attacking, you may lower his ATK by 2 (until end of turn) to exhaust target visible character. You can’t pay 2 ATK if his ATK is 1 or less.

5. Improved text

This set’s text has been improved in numerous ways. In each of the following examples, the new text is functionally identical to the old.

5.1 To play/flip/recruit

New - To play, discard a card.
Old - As an additional cost to play Strange Love, discard a card.

New - To flip, choose two different affiliations among characters you control.
Old- As an additional cost to flip Stark Tower, choose two different team affiliations among characters you control.

5.2 Play/flip/recruit only

New - Play only if you control a Team-Up.
Old - Play Strange Love only if you control a Team-Up.

New - Recruit only if you control a character with an affiliation other than Wild Pack.
Old - Recruit Silver Sable only if you control a character with a team affiliation other than Wild Pack.

5.3 Use only

New - Use only once per turn.
Old - Use this power only once per turn.

5.4 Those affiliations

New - To play, choose two different affiliations among characters you control.
Ongoing: Crossover those affiliations. As an additional cost to play Ritual Sacrifice, choose two different team affiliations among characters you control.
Ongoing: Crossover the chosen affiliations.
Old - To flip, choose two different affiliations among characters you control.
Crossover those affiliations. As an additional cost to flip Stark Tower, choose two different team affiliations among characters you control.
Crossover the chosen affiliations.

5.5 Enters combat

New - Whenever Devil-Slayer enters combat, you may reveal the top five cards of your deck.
Old - Whenever Devil-Slayer attacks or defends, you may reveal the top five cards of your deck.

New - Whenever Man-Thing enters combat with a character, you may reveal a Spider-Friends character card from your hand.
Old - Whenever Man-Thing defends against or attacks a character, you may reveal a Spider-Friends character card from your hand.

5.6 Enters a KO’d pile

New - When Shathra enters a KO'd pile from play, discard two cards.
Old - When Shathra is put into a KO'd pile from play, discard two cards.

5.7 Enters play

New - When Aunt May enters play, you may search your deck for a card named Spider-Man, reveal it, and put it into your hand.
Old - When Aunt May comes into play, you may search your deck for a card named Spider-Man, reveal it, put it into your hand, and shuffle your deck.

Aunt May also illustrates that cards no longer tell you to shuffle after a search because the rules do.

5.8 Discard [cardname]

New - Discard The N'Garai >>> Target attacker or defender gets -1 DEF this attack.
Old - Discard The N'Garai >>> Target attacker or defender gets -1 DEF this attack. Use this power only if The N'Garai is in your hand.

Cards can be discarded only from hand, so cards no longer spell out that a discard cost can be paid only if a card is in your hand.

6. Unique and Non-Unique versions

Starting with this set, a card’s uniqueness information is printed in its version line rather its text box.

Example: A Unique equipment like Ego Gem now has version “Unique” rather than the unique keyword printed in its text box. Ego Gem remains Unique even while attached to a stunned character.

Example: A Non-Unique location like Mausoleum now has version “Non-Unique” rather than “Mausoleum is not unique” printed in its text box.

7. Exhaust it if you don't control another Spider-Friends character

Zabu, Constant Companion
Character, 1, Spider-Friends, 3 ATK/2 DEF
Concealed

When Zabu enters play, exhaust him if you don't control another Spider-Friends character.

When such a card enters play, a triggered effect goes on the chain. Affiliations of characters you control are checked only as that effect resolves, so you could, for example, crossover in response.

8. Exhaust all other characters you control

Sub-Mariner, King of Atlantis
Character, 3, Marvel Defenders / Fantastic Four, 6 ATK/4 DEF
Substitute

Whenever Sub-Mariner attacks, exhaust all other characters you control.

As such a triggered effect resolves, it exhausts all other characters you control after all attackers have already exhausted. It doesn’t remove other team attackers from combat.

9. If all characters you control

9.1 If all characters you control share at least one affiliation

Big Leagues
Plot Twist, 3
If all characters you control share at least one affiliation, target attacker you control gets +4 ATK this attack.

Check affiliations only as such an effect resolves. The condition is true if there's at least one affiliation that all characters you control share, regardless of what other affiliations they have. If you control one or more unaffiliated characters, the condition is false.

9.2 Play only if all characters you control have the X affiliation.

The Order
Plot Twist, 3
Play only if all characters you control have the Marvel Defenders affiliation.

Discard a card. If you do, ready any number of target backup characters you control. Those characters can't attack this turn.

You can play such a card only if all characters you control share the specified affiliation, regardless of what other affiliations they have. If you control one or more unaffiliated characters, you can’t play it.

10. Wild Pack

10.1 A card with an affiliation other than Wild Pack

Silver Sable, World's Deadliest Mercenary
Character, 4, Wild Pack, 7/7
Loyalty

Recruit only if you control a character with an affiliation other than Wild Pack.

Whenever Silver Sable stuns a character, return that character to its owner's hand.

A character with two or more affiliations, one of which is Wild Pack, is “a character with an affiliation other than Wild Pack.”

10.2 Wild Pack, Army

Wild Pack, Army (MSM-055C)
Character, 1, Spider-Friends, 1/1
Wild Pack gets +1 ATK while team attacking.

This character:

• is a Spider-Friends character, not a Wild Pack character.
• is still the only card named Wild Pack.

SPECIFIC CARDS

Banished to the Abyss
Plot Twist, 3
Play only during the build phase.

Whenever target Marvel Defenders character you control becomes exhausted this turn, it gets +1/+2 this turn.

The target doesn’t get +1/+2 this turn if it's already exhausted on resolution. The modifier triggers whenever the target goes from being ready to exhausted this turn. It triggers whenever the target becomes stunned while ready.

Capture Net
Equipment, 1
Capture Net costs 1 less to recruit onto a Wild Pack character.

Equipped character has "Activate >>> Return target stunned character to its owner's hand. Put a bounty counter on a card you control named Bounty Hunt."

If the target of the activated effect is no longer stunned or in play as it resolves, the entire effect is negated, so no bounty counter is added.

Carnage, Psychopath
Character, 4, Sinister Syndicate, 9/7
Loyalty—Reveal

At the start of the combat phase, lose 1 endurance for each resource you control.

Boost—KO a resource you control: When Carnage enters play, characters get +2 ATK this turn at the start of the combat phase this turn.

If you boost Carnage, all characters get +2 ATK at the start of the combat phase this turn whether or not they were in play as Carnage entered play.

Catch You Later!
Plot Twist, 2
Play only during the build phase.

If you control a Spider-Friends character, players can't play plot twists while target character is in combat this turn.

Check the affiliations of characters you control only as the effect resolves. Check whether or not the target is in combat continuously until end of turn.

Death's Embrace
Plot Twist, 3
To play, discard a card.

Search your deck for up to two Underworld character cards that share a name. Reveal those cards, put one into your hand, and put the other into your KO'd pile.

You can search for a single Underworld character card with any name if you choose. If you do, reveal it and put it into your hand.

Devil-Slayer, Eric Simon Payne
Character, 5, Marvel Defenders, 9/9
Substitute

Whenever Devil-Slayer enters combat, you may reveal the top five cards of your deck. Remove all revealed plot twist cards from the game and put the rest on the bottom of your deck. You can play those removed cards this attack.

You can play those removed cards only if it's legal to do so. For example, you can't play cards playable only during the recovery phase, for which there are no legal targets, or for which you can't satisfy a cost. If you play a removed card, it goes on the chain and then to your KO'd pile as usual. Any removed cards that you don't play this attack stay removed from the game. You can't play them after this attack ends.

Dweller-in-Darkness, Fear Lord
Character, 6, Underworld, 12/12
Loyalty—Reveal, Concealed

Activate >>> Target attacker an opponent controls and each defender you control get -1 ATK this attack for each character card in your KO'd pile.

The activated effect targets an attacker but not a defender, so it can be played during an opponent’s direct attack. Count character cards in your KO'd pile only on resolution.

Elektra, Leader of the Hand
Character, 7, Spider-Friends / Crime Lords, 17/14
Concealed—Optional

Pay 17 ATK this turn >>> Target defender's DEF becomes 0 this attack. Use only if Elektra is attacking.

The target's DEF is lowered to 0 as the payment effect resolves. It can still be changed by later modifiers this attack.

Francis Klum <> Mysterio, Mutant Magician
Character, 4, Sinister Syndicate, 8/5, Mutant–Mental
Concealed

Whenever another Sinister Syndicate character you control defends, you may exhaust Francis Klum. If you do, remove all defenders from this attack and Francis Klum becomes a defender.

The italics above update the printed card text.

Hellstorm, Son of Satan
Character, 5, Marvel Defenders / Underworld, 10/10
Dual Loyalty

Whenever Hellstorm becomes exhausted for the first time each turn, you may return a card from your KO'd pile to your hand.

Hellstorm’s power doesn't trigger when he becomes stunned, because his text box becomes inactive. It triggers only when he goes from being ready to face-up-and-exhausted for the first time each turn.

Howard the Duck, Master of Quack-Fu
Character, 1, Marvel Defenders, 2/2
Substitute

Backup: Activate, move Howard the Duck from your visible area to your hidden area >>> At the start of the recovery phase this turn, move Howard the Duck to your visible area. Use only during the build phase.

At the start of the recovery phase this turn, move Howard the Duck to your visible area even if he is stunned and/or already visible.

Hulk, Grumpy Green Goliath
Character, 5, Marvel Defenders, 9/9
Substitute

Whenever Hulk becomes exhausted, put a +1/+1 counter on him.

Hulk’s power doesn't trigger when he becomes stunned, because his text box becomes inactive.

Illyana Rasputin <> Magik, Queen of Limbo
Character, 5, Underworld / X-Men, 9/9, Mutant – Energy
Concealed—Optional

Discard a character card >>> At the start of the recovery phase this turn, each player may recover a stunned character he controls. Use only once per turn.

The primary player chooses a stunned character first, and then other players choose in clockwise order. Then all chosen characters recover simultaneously.

Justice Is Served!
Plot Twist, 1
Target attacker you control gets +2 ATK this attack. You may KO an equipment with cost 0 equipped to a defender.

This effect targets neither an equipment (so it can be played with no equipment in play) nor a defender (so it can be played during your direct attack.)

Legacy of Evil
Plot Twist, 1
Play only if you control more Sinister Syndicate characters than resources.

Draw two cards.

Play only if you control more Sinister Syndicate characters than the number of resources you control.

Luke Cage, Neighborhood Watch
Character, 3, Spider-Friends, 5/5
Reservist

Boost—Discard a character card: When Luke Cage enters play, he gains the affiliations of that card.

Luke gains the affiliations the discarded card had as it left your hand. He gains those affiliations in addition to any others he has, until he leaves play.

Man-Eater, Intruders
Character, 3, Wild Pack, 5/4
Reservist

Free >>> Target character an opponent controls can be attacked as though it were visible and unprotected this turn. Use only once per turn.

This power doesn't make the target visible or unprotected, but attacks can be proposed against it as though it were this turn.

Man-Thing, Theodore Sallis
Character, 6, Spider-Friends, 0/14
Whenever Man-Thing enters combat with a character, you may reveal a Spider-Friends character card from your hand. If you do, stun that character at the start of the recovery phase this turn.

Whenever Man-Thing is team attacked, his power triggers for each attacker. As each triggered effect resolves, you may reveal the same Spider-Friends card multiple times. Whenever Man-Thing team attacks, his power does not trigger for each other attacker; it triggers only once (for the defender).

Midnight Massacre
Plot Twist, 3
Target Underworld attacker you control gets +3 ATK this attack. If that character is hidden, move it to your visible area and it gets +3 DEF this attack.

The DEF bonus is in addition to the ATK bonus, not instead of it.

Modred the Mystic, Servant of Chthon
Character, 4, Underworld, 8/6
Stunned characters you control can't be KO'd.

If you recover Modred during the wrap-up, his power saves your stunned characters from being KO'd that wrap-up. While he is stunned, his power won't save himself or any other characters. Stunned characters that can't be KO'd remain in play stunned.

Monster Island
Location, 2
Terraform

While you control an Infinity Watch character, each player can't target a character he controls with plot twist effects if he controls another character with greater cost.

Each player continuously calculates the greatest cost among characters he or she controls and can't play plot twist effects targeting a character he or she controls unless it has that cost.

New Baxter Building
Location, 1
Terraform

Activate >>> Draw a card. Use only if you recruited an equipment this turn.

Discard a Fantastic Four character card >>> Ready New Baxter Building. Use only once per turn.

An equipment is “recruited” as soon as it is successfully added to the chain. You can use this activated power in response and/or if the recruit effect was negated.

Nitro, Robert Hunter
Character, 5, Sinister Syndicate / Kree, 10/10
At the start of the combat phase, lose 1 endurance for each resource you control.

Boost—KO all resources you control: When Nitro enters play, characters opponents control can't recover this turn.

If you boost Nitro, opposing characters can’t recover this turn whether or not they were in play as Nitro entered play.

Noble Kale, Lord of Hell
Character, 8, Underworld, 19/19
Concealed

Noble Kale can attack players directly while you control another Underworld character.

While you control another Underworld character, Noble Kale can attack players directly regardless of the characters they control (unless there is a character that Noble Kale must attack if able).

Paladin, Intruders
Character, 2, Wild Pack, 2/3
Reservist

Activate >>> Each opponent can't recruit characters this turn with the same cost as another character he recruited this turn. Use only if you control another Wild Pack character.

Responding with this effect won't negate or "undo" recruit effects already on the chain. A character’s cost is the number printed in its upper left corner; additional costs such as boost are ignored.

Punisher, Frank Castle
Character, 3, Spider-Friends, 4/3
Reservist

Pay 1 ATK this turn >>> Target character gets -1 DEF this turn. Use only during the combat phase and only if Punisher has not been in combat this turn.

Punisher “has not been in combat this turn” if he has had neither the attacker nor defender characteristic this turn. In particular, you can’t use his power if he is currently attacking or defending.

Quicksilver, Terrigenesis Rebirth
Character, 6, Inhumans, 13/12
Reservist

Free >>> Remove target attacker you control from this attack, and Quicksilver becomes an attacker. Use only once per turn and only if you control no face-down resources.

No check is made as to whether Quicksilver could legally attack the defender. If Quicksilver's effect resolves and he becomes an attacker, it triggers “whenever this character attacks” powers but not “whenever this character defends” powers. A character that becomes an attacker during a team attack also becomes a team attacker. The removed attacker doesn't ready, and Quicksilver doesn’t exhaust.

Ravencroft Institute
Location, 2
Activate, reveal a card at random from your hand >>> Sinister Syndicate characters you control with cost X get +X ATK this turn, where X is the revealed card's cost.

If your hand is empty, you can’t pay the cost of this power. If you have one (or more) cards in hand, you can. Once a random card has been revealed, the playing of this effect can't be rewound.

Richard Rider <> Nova, Xandarian Nova Corps
Character, 4, Marvel Defenders, 7/7
Substitute

Backup: Activate >>> Stun target character at the start of the recovery phase this turn. Use only during the build phase.

Choose the target as you play the backup effect during the build phase.

Speedball, Robert Baldwin
Character, 1, Spider-Friends, 2/0
Evasion

Whenever Speedball becomes stunned, target character you control can't be stunned while team attacking this turn.

If Speedball becomes stunned during the conclusion of a team attack, you don't choose a target until after that attack concludes, so it's too late to "save" any attackers in that attack.

Spider-Man Robot, Timespinner
Character, 3, Sinister Syndicate, 6/1
Reservist

Spider-Man Robot can't have reinforcement.

Boost—KO a resource you control: When Spider-Man Robot enters play, characters opponents control lose and can't have reinforcement this turn at the start of the combat phase this turn.

If you boost Spider-Man Robot, opposing characters lose reinforcement at the start of the combat phase this turn whether or not they were in play as Spider-Man Robot entered play.

Spider-Sense Tingling!
Plot Twist, 3
Target Spider-Friends character you control has evasion this turn until it becomes stunned.

The target has evasion until end of turn or until it becomes stunned, whichever happens first.

Suffocation
Plot Twist, 2
Play only if you control a Sinister Syndicate character.

The controller of target character an opponent controls moves it to a different position in his front row or exhausts it.

The target need not be ready or in a front row. The target's controller chooses whether to move or exhaust, and where to move if applicable. If the target is already exhausted, its controller can still choose to exhaust (effectively doing nothing).

Target Practice
Plot Twist, 2
Target Spider-Friends attacker or defender you control gets +1 DEF this attack. If that character is named Spider-Man, instead, it gets +2 DEF this attack.

The +2 DEF bonus is instead of the +1 DEF bonus, not in addition to it. Check the target's name only as the effect resolves.

The Dark Dimension, Non-Unique
Location, 1
Terraform

When you flip The Dark Dimension, put the top three cards of your deck into your KO'd pile. You may return an Underworld character card from your KO'd pile to your hand.

You choose whether to return an Underworld character card, and which one, after you put the top three cards of your deck into your KO'd pile. You may return one of those three cards if applicable.

The Illuminati
Plot Twist, 0
Look at the top three cards of your deck. Put any number of them on the bottom of your deck and the rest on the top of your deck in any order.

If The Illuminati is in your opening hand, you can play it before you draw your first two cards, because its cost is 0. All players must finish any mulligans before any player can play The Illuminati.

Trial by Jury
Plot Twist, 3
Negate target plot twist or non-activated payment effect an opponent controls targeting a Spider-Friends character you control. If that character is named Spider-Man, it gets +2 DEF this turn.

The Spider-Friends character need not be that effect's only target. In the unlikely event that effect is targeting two characters you control named Spider-Man, you choose which one gets +2 DEF this turn as Trial by Jury resolves.

We Had a Team-Up, Team-Up
Plot Twist, 2
To play, choose a name and one or more affiliations among characters you control.

Ongoing: Characters you control with that name and character cards you own with that name gain those affiliations.

As an additional cost to play, choose a name among characters you control and one or more affiliations among characters you control. The name and affiliation(s) need not be from the same character(s).

Zarathos, Demon of Fire
Character, 3, Underworld, 6/6
When Zarathos enters play, return a character you control to its owner's hand. Zarathos gains that character's affiliations.

Choose a character you control as the triggered effect resolves. If you control no other characters at that time, you must return Zarathos to your hand, and nothing else happens. Otherwise, Zarathos gains the affiliations that character had as it left play. He gains those affiliations in addition to any others he has, until he leaves play.
